Focus

Within this unit of study we will look at music and war and fanfares.  We will develop an awareness for how music was important during the war and how it can be used to portray war.  We will study the cultural and historical background behind the music to gain a better understanding and become aware of a wide repertoire from big band to contemporary works.  Performances of war pieces will be recorded and you will compose your own war music using Fanfares.

You will learn to

Identify war music and recognise the social and cultural contexts

Develop an understanding of the style and purpose of the music looking at how it was used as music for enjoyment (Big Band, Vera Lynn) to how it can portray war (Gorecki - 3rd Symphony - Auschwitz)

Develop an awareness of instruments uses

Become more familiar with musical forms and structures - Fanfare and Harmonic Sequence

Develop an understanding of styles used - swing and march

Respond to and evaluate different types of war music

Compose using fanfares and record

Perform a variety of war tunes and songs

You will learn about

The historical and cultural importance of war music - drums used in battle field to send messages...

Your work will show

Knowledge of the musical styles and forms used in War music, in particular fanfares

Understanding and awareness of social, cultural and historical influences 

Good listening skills and understanding of forms used in composition

The ability to work well on your own and with others in performance work

A thorough understanding of fanfares and the harmonic sequence

An awareness of a wide variety of composers and repertoire

An ability to discuss instrumentation

The ability to fit part with others in class performance

Your finished work will include

A written record of listening tasks

Well researched and written homework in your own words

A video recorded presentation about war and music (in groups)

A recording of a fanfare composition and notated copy
