Folk Music

Focus

Within this unit we will develop our awareness of folk music.  We shall study and listen to English, Irish, Scottish and Russian folk tunes and compare the use of instruments and the style used.  In particular we will become aware of Lombard rhythms and the use modes.  We will listen and perform a variety of folk music and then compose our own tune.  

You will learn to

Identify in folk music the use of Lombard rhythm and modes Develop aural awareness Respond to and evaluate a wide variety of folk music from around the world  Perform different folk tunes to familiarize yourself with them Identify instruments used and discuss the music using technical terms

You will learn about

Lombard rhythms, modes, ballads and drones Historical and cultural background of the music The influences of folk music on Classical and pop music Instruments used in folk music Performing folk music and composing in a given style

Your work will show

Knowledge of the music style and instruments used Understanding and awareness of social, cultural and historical influences Good listening skills and application of theory and technical terms The ability to identify Lombard rhythms, drones and modes A basic understanding of the construction of modes The ability to work well on your own and with others in performance work The ability to fit part with others in class performance
