What is this unit all about?


Medieval Music

Focus

Within this unit we will develop our awareness of time signatures and aurally discriminate between simple and compound time.  This will be achieved through listening and performing various medieval dances.  We will also learn develop our understanding of music history.

You will learn to

Clap 68 rhythm and play a farandole on keyboards or recorders

Compose music in a similar style

Identify medieval instruments from listening extracts

Identify styles and techniques used in medieval music

Develop aural awareness

Respond to and evaluate music

You will learn about

Simple and compound rhythm

Medieval Music - the way it is written, instruments used, dates, developments

Dances in Medieval music

Culture at the time

Composition using question and answer and drones

Your work will show

Knowledge of Medieval music - dates, instruments, style

Good listening skills and understanding of changes in the music

Aural awareness of the difference between simple and compound time

The ability to work well with others and on your own in performance and composition

Your finished work will include

A written record of listening tasks

Well researched and written homework

Information on Medieval music, instruments used and composers

A recorded class performance of Farandole

A written comment on your improvisation

A completed composition using question & answer and drones
