Chinese Plucked string Instruments

The Pipa

Pipa is one of the oldest and well-known instruments in the Chinese orchestra with 2,000 years of history. . Pipa is one of the most symbolic Chinese musical instruments.

This Chinese lute is like a Spanish guitar in some ways, with finger nails being used to pluck the strings.  It is pear shaped and has four string which tune to A, D, E and A.  It sounds like a steel guitar.

Yangqin

The Yangqin was introduced to China during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), possibly from Persia and Arabia, where it is called Santour or Psaltery.

It is similar to the European dulcimer except that its striking hammers are made of slender bamboo sticks.   Over 400 years the instrument became very popular and improved.  It has become one of the favourite musical instruments of the Chinese people
