Chinese Musician:  Gong Yi (born 1941)

Gong Yi first performed at the age of 15.  He was highly praised by CHA Fu-xi, a famous qin player.  In 1957 Gong Yi entered the Affiliated Middle School of the  Shanghai Conservatory of Music. There he had exclusively studied qin for 9 years. He graduated from the Conservatory in 1966 and started his work as a qin soloist in the Shanghai Film Studio Orchestra and the Shanghai Orchestra. In 1978 he was transferred to the Chinese Shanghai Folk Orchestra and was later appointed to the post of Music Director.

Over the years Gong Yi has played in China, Europe, America and Southeast Asia, playing ancient qin music from the 13th century.

He now has many important responsibilities which require his expert knowledge of the qin.
